The majority of recent books by Christian academics on this subject have all but surrendered the entire field of origins to an evolutionary “molecule-to-man” view of reality. Ouweneel that provides introductory insight into a significant area of Christian life. Clearly the healthy functioning of our emotional life is profoundly important for each of us, as well as for those with whom we come into daily contact. When we experience a physical problem, a broken leg, for example, we quickly rush off to a medical doctor to have the problem "fixed." Until recently the Christian community has been quite reluctant to seek the help of a psychological doctor when serious psychological breaks occur in our lives. Slowly, this condition is beginning to shift. But much like our political, economic, or social experiences, we need to pay close attention to what is informing our psychological views.

To what extent ought we to trust the mainstream forms of psychology? Ouweneel lays out a thorough analysis of what ought to constitute a scientific view of psychology grounded in a coherent biblical world-and-life view. Ouweneel provides a thorough assessment of the typical range of psychologies and their impact, along with their respective strengths and weaknesses. A highlight of the work is the close attention paid to the many confusions and distortions that have arisen in Christian circles as to precisely how psychology is to be understood from a biblical perspective. Whereas Plato and Aristotle employed the term dialectic within the context of the human ability to discern or to infer, Dooyeweerd uses it to designate the irreconcilable tension between the two opposing poles of the basic motive of Greek thought. He argues that the kind of dialectic found on the level of ultimate commitments, preferably designated by him as a basic motive or ground motive, not only transcends the realm of logical-analytical thinking, but at the same time also informs and directs it. According to him, the basic motive of matter and form, directing the entire development of Greek philosophy, is broken apart by an inherent dialectic. The only option is to assign primacy either to the matter pole (the initial development of Greek philosophy) or the form pole (since Anaxagoras and culminating in the thought of Socrates, Plato and Aristotle), without being able to obtain a higher synthesis and encompassing both. In this encompassing and penetrating work, Dooyeweerd demonstrates why the historian of philosophy should always aim at understanding each epoch in the history of philosophy in terms of its own deepest motivation and direction-giving ground motive.

Author:

Herman Dooyeweerd (1894-1977) was born in Amsterdam to Calvinistic parents whose convictions and way of life were profoundly influenced by Abraham Kuyper, the great Dutch statesman, educator and journalist, and one of the protestant leaders through which the evangelical wing of Dutch reformed protestantism emerged. These lectures express the core essence of Dooyeweerd's four volume philosophical work A New Critique of Theoretical Thought. In a masterful summary, Dooyeweerd first tackles the central dogma of the modern era, namely, the dogma of the autonomy of theoretical thought. While this dogma has been challenged in many ways, both in the twentieth, and twenty-first centuries, none of these challenges have made the dogma a truly critical question. If they had, the claims for the constant centrality of rational thought from the ancient Greeks to medieval Thomastic scholasticism and on to both the modern and post-modern humanist expressions would be exposed as possessing radically different presuppositions which transcend the confines of theoretical thought. By subjecting this dogma to a truly radical critique, Dooyeweerd demonstrates that all theoretical thought is grounded upon religious presuppositions that exceed the boundaries of both philosophy and theology, and which need to be clearly exposed and articulated if theoretical thought is to truly understand its own nature. He similarly demonstrates how such a critique provides the basis for the development of a Christian philosophy that can challenge historicism and establish a fruitful dialogue with non-Christian thought.

But this philosophy has remained obscure to most Christians, while the Church at large has unwittingly drunk from the depths of apostate pagan philosophy dressed in Christian religious garb. This book by D.F.M. (Hardcover)

Is a systematically coherent Christian philosophy possible? And if so, what are its essential elements? In this exceptional new work, Andree Troost, a close colleague of Professor Herman Dooyeweerd, lays out these elements in a way that attends to both the biblical grounds from which this philosophy is evoked, as well as each of the systematic conceptual elements that make up this new Cosmonomic philosophy. What is unique about this work is the clarity, simplicity, and unmatched biblical insight that has been born from a lifetime of study and reflection. If the Christian thinker can only afford to read one volume on Christian philosophy, this is pre-eminently the book to read. Its broad range, covering most questions typically raised about a specificaly Christian approach to systematic philosophy, and its authoritative presentation will make this volume the standard introduction to Reformational Philosophy for many years to come.

Specifications:

Format: Hardcover
Page Count: 410
ISBN-13: 978-0-88815-255-8
Size: 15.24 x 2.39 x 22.86 cm
Published: 2020
