Many works are available dealing with Dooyeweerd’s philosophy. However, none of them focuses specifically on a non-reductionist ontology—that is, a theory of reality in which its irreducible diversity is taken seriously. The present orientation toward a non-reductionist ontology seeks to test the fruitfulness of Dooyeweerd’s insights and distinctions within his own field of specialization, the science of law, before broadening the perspective to consider the general philosophical implications of his novel insights and systematic distinctions.
This approach is particularly fruitful for understanding what takes place within the various academic disciplines, including the natural sciences, where reductionist tendencies have often shaped theoretical inquiry. We therefore commence by examining the significance of Dooyeweerd’s 1926 Inaugural Address, which laid the foundation for the development of a non-reductionist ontology.
