This volume of Select Essays is exceptional for its systematic and historical significance. Its opening study on time may be regarded as a continuation of Dooyeweerd’s magnum opus, De Wijsbegeerte der Wetsidee (1935–1936). After examining major philosophical and scientific conceptions of time, Dooyeweerd develops his distinctive understanding of “cosmic time,” which expresses itself differently within each modal aspect.
He further distinguishes between time-order and time-duration, succession and causality, and the law-side and factual side of temporal reality. Together, the essays offer important contributions to the nature of time, the influence of historicism, and the structural foundations of the concept of sovereignty.
